The benchlands of East Kelowna has been prime agricultural land for well over 100 years now. You'll be riding through orchards and gardens that were first planted by the original settlers of the area in the late 1800's and early 1900's. From here, fruit was shipped around the world. One of Kelowna's most recognized chefs, Mark Filitow will introduce you to his favorite farm-to-table sources and provide an intimate insider's view of this bountiful region. We'll stop at local wineries (including Tantalus Vineyards and Meadow Vista Honey Wines), herb and flower gardens, Arlo's Honey Farm, Caldwell Heritage Farms, fruit stands and working orchards with plenty of sampling along the way!

Optional Gourmet Picnic Lunch (catered by Mark and Details Catering) en route.

Italians have been part of Kelowna's story since the beginning. In the 1880's, an Oblate missionary, Father Pandosy, convinced Giovanni Casorso to come start the BC Interior's first agricultural community. Since then, the story of Kelowna and the story of the Okanagan's Italian Community have been deeply intertwined. Our curator, Domenic Rampone, has designed an exceptional ride and exploration of this history. We'll visit the vineyards and orchards still maintained by descendants of those first pioneers. We'll share the stories of the Capozzis, Casorsos, Russos, Rampones and the other notable Italian families that have made their home here and left their imprint on this region. Of course, we'll also have a chance to sample plenty of Italian treats (including espresso and gelatto) along the way.

*Calabria is just one region of Italy. Immigrants came from all over. The Casorsos, for example, came from Piedmont. But "Calabria" alliterates nicely with Kelowna!

KVR History: McCulloch's Miracle

  Kevin Witzke Railway Engineer

Kevin WitzkeRailway Engineer

This experience is a historically themed tour of the KVR. Other KVR Tours available in our Fitness + Adventure Packages.

Myra Canyon is a box canyon about a kilometer wide. In 1910, when engineer Andrew McCulloch tackled the challenge of getting the Kettle Valley Railway across this canyon, he knew it would not be easy. He was right. He literally had to hang his railway from the side of the surrounding mountains, requiring the construction of 19 trestles and the laying of 11 kilometers of track. He later commented that he had, "never seen a railway built in such difficult conditions." Join us for this ride along an engineering miracle. Our host, railway engineer Kevin Witzke (who helped reconstruct the trestles after the 2003 fire) will give you an unforgettable glimpse of the challenges that lay before the K.V.R. construction crew over 100 years ago. We'll do an out and back from the Myra parking lot, as the scenery (and story) is completely different each way.
